If you’ve been following along on my Instagram, you’ve probably caught a few sneak peeks of our latest home project. Well… the wait is over. Our old roof has been replaced with stunning designer shingles, and we are completely smitten with the result!

What started as a stressful surprise courtesy of Hurricane Helene turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Thanks to our insurance covering most of the cost, we were able to upgrade our roof in a way that not only boosts our home’s curb appeal but also improves its longevity. We did extensive research to make sure we chose the right shingles, so you don’t have to struggle if this is on your home improvement list.

Here’s what our roof looked like before: architectural shingles. They were already an upgrade from standard 3-tab shingles, but designer shingles take things to a whole new level.

For context: architectural shingles provide a durable, dimensional look at a moderate price (around $5.50 to $12.25 per square foot), while designer shingles offer a thicker, more detailed appearance that mimics high-end materials like slate or cedar—at a higher price point ($12.50 to $15.50 per square foot).

When we discovered our roof needed replacement, we thought: if we’re going through the hassle anyway, why not go all in and choose exactly what we want?

The subtle tonal variations and classic look instantly elevate the home, adding charm in a way that’s both understated and eye-catching.

So, was it worth it? Absolutely.

A designer roof isn’t just functional—it’s a major curb appeal boost. Every time I look up, I get a little flutter of excitement. It looks like a real slate roof, and the attention to detail makes our home feel polished and cohesive.

The new shingles complement our limewashed brick, shutters, front door, flower beds, and lawn makeover perfectly, giving the whole exterior a unified, pulled-together look. We still have plans to replace our old gutters—maybe even upgrade to copper—but that’s a project for another day.
